Freezing Rain to Rain South Central PA, North Central Maryland This Afternoon
Temperatures Struggle Sleet Freezing Rain Icing
Warmer air is moving in aloft but at the surface it is a different story. Temperatures from Northern New Jersey to NYC & Long Island are in the low and middle 20s while in the Hudson Valley & Connecticut they are in the upper teens and lower 20s. The snow sleet line has pushed up to Route 84 but to the south it is sleet & freezing rain all afternoon into this evening. Icing will continue to build on surfaces as long as the temperature stays below 32.
The HRRR temperature loop shows the 32 degree line at the surface and what a tough time it will have to move northward this afternoon and evening. It only grudgingly moves northward and moves just inland of the coast late this evening. In Southern and South Central Pennsylvania it also slowly moves northward this afternoon but some areas will see cold air trapped. Models always have a tough time getting the cold air out of the way.
Things do get better on Wednesday with some sunshine and clouds and highs reaching into the 40s. Thursday looks like a nice day of sunshine with highs in the 40s to near 50. Friday the next cold front arrives with the chance for showers and highs reaching into the 50s.
